Artist’s Statement: This month’s featured artist: Sarah Cox
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Looking at the world, reading, most importantly, meditation.
Who is your favourite artist?
Painter: Wassily Kandinsky. Quilter: Nancy Crow
What artist movement(s) do you feel most inspired by?
Cubism.
Talk about your art...how do you feel you art has evolved since you first picked up a needle?
I've shifted emphasis from functional to expressive. I started making clothing in my early teens- re-purposed those skills to make quilts for sleeping under. Now I've added skills from the collage and printmaking world and my work is mostly about making walls more interesting.
What do you aim to do within your works?
Use colour and sometimes image to express an idea or feeling.
Are you a 'clean' creator or do you need to get your hands dirty when you make?
Impeccable technique gives me great satisfaction. Neatness helps with that. I see myself as a master crafter as well as an artist. I sometimes get dirty, but I tidy up.
Are there any exhibition/art event you went to recently that most impressed you and why were you impressed?
Exhibition on screen: Vincent van Gogh. I love his paintings. This film united the images with a deep understanding of the person who made them and an analysis of his motivation in the context of his time.
