Jago Neal and Jan Huijbers processes and outcomes differ greatly, however their motivation can be viewed jointly as an exploration into natural forms, patterns and experimentation of their chosen media.
Neal is interested in alternative photographic processes that allow serendipitous moments to occur. “I enjoy exploring the transformative ways you can create imagery using methods of ‘Liquid light’, ‘photo-grams’ and ‘Pinhole photography’. By incorporating other mediums into my work or transferring my images onto different surfaces I try to enhance, extend or replicate what is already suggested and elevate the feeling it conveys.” (Neal)
Jan Huijbers references traditional Pacific tapa-cloth patterns, geometric and mathematical imagery and oceanic organisms. The intentions behind his work signify the preserving of our natural recourses, specifically pertaining to aquatic life. However Huijbers admits to needing relief from the somber thematic concerns of this project. A second series of work gives the artist this outlet; paintings inspired by carnival. Bright colours, shapes and liveliness that sing out from the canvas create a visual balance to Jan’s studio.
Artists Talks: Saturday 12th October. 11am - 1pm - Part of ArtWeek 2019

Art Auction
Exhibition & Auction 7th - 21st April 2018 Opening: TBC The Kumeu Arts Centre Expansion Fundraising Art Auction & Exhibition: 7th – 21st of April With the increasing population in Rodney the demand for services and public facilities are rising, therefore, plans have been drawn up by Pacific Environments Architects to build an extension to our existing building. The proposed improvement to our facilities will include a new entrance and reception area, additional gallery and workshop spaces. This would allow us to offer more of our services, including exhibitions, classes, workshops and performances, in a better, more functional building. Kumeu Arts Centre will be able to increase its capacity and offer a more diverse range of options to our community. However, we are currently a long way from having the money to make this dream become a reality. Therefore, we are running this Art Auction to help fundraise. By purchasing Artworks from this auction people can help our cause while acquiring quality Art works by prominent and local artists such as; James F Ormsby, Gavin Chai, Amber Emm, Trevor Parker, and Judy Stokes. Many of the artists who have generously donated works to this auction have been involved with Kumeu Arts Centre in some way, some for a long time, either through teaching, exhibiting or volunteering here. You can come to Kumeu Arts Centre to view the works in our gallery during the Art Auction Exhibition. April 9th - 21st 2018 during which time visitors will also be able to place bids on the works displayed. |

Vibraphone, xylophone, piano, acoustic guitar, ukulele, glockenspiel and percussion are all performed by Tuck herself, with everything from banjo to trombone from others. The songs are well ordered, with reflective track Black Heart breaking up the playful percussion heavily used throughout the rest of the album." Raylee BradfieldBorn in Balclutha and raised in Owaka Valley on the family farm, Raylee came to Auckland in 1996 as a vocal student at Excel School of Performing Arts which has also been the vocal school of Sarah Brown, Vince Hardding, Adeaze, and Ben Lummis. After a spell studying Raylee has spent the last 9 years teaching vocal lessons at various institutions including Excel and Avondale College among others...Raylee has released her EP "Walk a Mile" |
Acoustic Evenings - AJ Bell in Concert
Saturday 29th October 2016, 7.45pm - 10.30pm AJ Bell is one of New Zealand's finest song writers that some of you may never of heard of. Well... that's about to change as Andrew takes you on a ride through small town New Zealand. Don't miss the opportunity to experience this inspirational Kiwi singer-songwriter. Reviews "Auckland singer-songwriter A.J.Bell released a debut album, Ragwort Touch, that had reviewers, this one included, reaching for their bag of rare superlatives. Bell’s long-overdue follow-up Hi-Biscuit is another album of lyrical depth and gentle musical textures driven by quiet consideration, understatement and keenly refined observations. The second of an almost perfect pair.’ * * * * NZ Herald ‘A songwriter of undeniable talent. An insightful, charming, and powerfully rendered discovery. Another exceptional album from the Auckland-via-Austin and Waimana songwriter. In any other country, Bell would be an icon.’ * * * * * The Dominion. ‘Every so often, you stumble across an album which moves, delights and startles you with its wit and skill. Listening to Ragwort Touch was like finding treasure in long grass.’ * * * * * Sunday News. ‘A.J. Bell re-affirms my faith in New Zealand-made music and rightfully claims his place among those who have helped compile it’s impressive musical legacy’. Otago Daily Times ‘A.J.Bell is a songwriter with his feet firmly on NZ soil, taking us on a road trip through the rural North Island of some indeterminate past, pulling up at dairies, pubs and pa along the way. If one could make records out of No 8 fencing wire, this is what they would sound like. He is singing New Zealand songs to New Zealander's and it sounds great’ The Listener |

CAITLIN SMITH AND PAUL SYMONDS ACOUSTIC EVENING
Saturday the 24th September 7.45pm - 10.30pm Caitlin Smith and Paul Symonds will be playing some of their original songs at the Kumeu Arts Centre, so grab a bottle of wine and spend the evening listening to great original music. $10 at the door. Caitlin is one of Auckland's best known jazz vocalists, regularly seen out working at venues all over the City. Some of you may not know that she writes great songs as well, which you will hear during her performance. Caitlin has the ability to draw her audience into the songs and hold them in the palm of her hand. In 1997 she joined up with guitarists Steve Gerrish and Graeme Webb to form The Fondue Set. In addition to regular gigs around Auckland, the group produced three albums. She has also performed as The Caitlin Smith Trio or Quartet and participates in other events with a variety of artists. Paul Symons lives in Kumeu. He played his first gig in his late teens in Dunedin. Paul caught the bug, gigging solo around Dunedin & Otago, writing songs, & recording a demo EP. He decided to maximize the ‘Bluesness’ of life by acquiring a vintage Bedford schoolbus & heading off in a never-ending spiral around the South & occasionally the North island, playing pubs, skifields, motorcycle rallies & festivals. Along the way holding down job as oilrig worker, gardener, painter, wharfie, builder, sawmiller & dumptruck driver (strictly for the ‘Johnny-Cashness’). The ever-expanding tour came to a welcome halt in Auckland in the mid 90s & the housebus was tethered. His first album “Spaceman” was released in 2005 to a warm response. Time was spent fronting & playing slide with legendry Westy party-band “The Dusters”, playing pedal-steel with alt country combo “Too Far Gone” & playing original music with Lott Larson in “F3” (the Fickle Finger of Fate). Then, as fate would have it, Lott joined Paul Symons in February 2011 to make the“Shooting Stars” album at Wellington’s Braeburn Studio with drummer Des Mallon. Planning underway for getting about a bit more & making some ruckus. Soon as Paul finishes the rebuild on the Schoolbus… |
