Artist Member interview: Harry Smith
* Where do you get your inspiration from?
From photos I have taken, photos in general, and other artists work inspire me to start thinking.
* Who is your favourite artist?
My favourite artist is Liz De King; her art is generally abstract, but her skills cover every kind art, using a variation of different mediums.
* What artist movement(s) do you feel most inspired by?
Liz De King, watching her painting is poetry in motion.
* Talk about your art...how do you feel you art has evolved since you first picked up a paint brush? What do you aim to do within your paintings? Are you a 'clean' painter or do you need to get your hands dirty when you paint?
At school painting was one of my favourite class’s , (in the 1950’s era, I always wanted to start again the chance. never came until 1974, when I was suddenly inspired, I painted my new family in oils, this was done in an abstract way. I started again in 2004, going to Ranui drop in centre, painting in oil, I stopped after 6 months, I started again about 2007, and have been painting ever since, but changed from oil to acrylic, and improving all the time generally painting abstract, I would like to keep on painting, showing and selling if possible, there’s not much space left on the walls. I am a very clean painter, no mess I keep my hands clean I have seen what dirty hands can do.
*Are there any exhibition/art event you went to recently that most impressed you and why were you impressed?
I called into the art centre several weeks ago to have a look at an exhibition called Materials and Poem’s, I was impressed by a painting which was mainly yellow, I am not sure what it was called, but the title of the painting was very evident by the way it was painted.
* In your opinion, what makes good art?
I think that colour and movement of the image make good art.
* What do you like most about Kumeu Arts Centre? What would you like to change/improve in Kumeu Arts Centre?
I am a new member, so I cannot comment on any improvements, I have noticed that the Art Centre has improved over the years, at the moment everything seems perfect.
N.B: Harry's work will be exhibited in our Papatuanuku Exhibition.
