Artist Interview, Introducing our Chairperson: Christine Rose
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Nature and my experiences in it - the quintessential Kiwi activities of camping, going to the beach, viewing nature
Who is your favourite artist?
Graham Sydney- I love his colours and his timeless, nostalgic take on nature and culture in the larger than life landscapes of the South Island
What artist movement(s) do you feel most inspired by?
Community arts - because art should be a part of all our everyday lives. I believe art is within us all, the trick is to let it out, and community arts projects allow us to find the little artist in us all.
Talk about your art...how do you feel you art has evolved since you first picked up a paint brush?, what do you aim to do within your paintings? Are you a 'clean' painter or do you need to get your hands dirty when you paint?
I paint and do other art for the fun of it, to express my love of the land and the way we interact with it. My art has technically improved since I started painting a few years ago, but it thankfully retains the spirit of a loving and almost whimsical relationship between art, nature, and our engagement with it. I'm a fairly clean painter in that I don’t get paint everywhere, but I usually have many art projects on the go at once - painting, ceramics, knitting & crochet, writing and poetry.
Is there any exhibition/art event you went to recently that most impressed you and why were you impressed?
The Endemic Art Gallery in Roxburgh which contained lovely wildlife paintings by Rebecca Gilmore, but more, amazing photography of Central Otago, by Greg Slui that brought tears to my eyes.
In your opinion, what makes good art?
Seeing the heart of the artist expressed in a compelling way.
Do you have a website?
No, but my tumblr page hosts most of my paintings and writing. tumblr (my blog): christinerosenz.tumblr.com/
What do you like most about Kumeu Arts Centre?
The hum of creativity, the fact that it is a place where strangers can become friends over an aesthetic exercise, the fact that it's affordable.
What would you like to change/improve in Kumeu Arts Centre?
The Chairperson (no not really), I'd love to see sculpture and art in the area outside.
