Kirsten Reid
* Where do you get your inspiration from?
Definitely NZ’s beautiful landscapes, nature and wildlife. I find that the beauty is in the detail and love how things can look different from one moment to the next, one day to the next and through the seasons.
* Who is your favourite artist?
Painters Grahame Sydney and Marc Rothko, Photographer Ansel Adams
* What artist movement(s) do you feel most inspired by?
Fine Art Photography, Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism
* Talk about your photography...how do you feel your photography has evolved since you first picked up a camera? What do you aim to do within your photography?
I bought my first SLR camera off a flatmate in London when I was 19, an Olympus OM10 with a manual adapter and only a 28mm wide angle lens. At that time I had no clue what all the numbers and dials were for. I taught myself from old library books and going out and taking photos at the weekends.
Through the Kumeu Photography Group and photo shoot outings I’m still learning and still experimenting. I try to capture the essence of our natural world and the relationships which exist within it. I especially like to take photos which are layered with bands of colour, different patterns and textures, and showing movement. I use various in-camera techniques, keeping any image editing in Photoshop to a bare minimum, usually only adjusting contrast, brightness and to trim. I enjoy creating photomontages and mixed media work, exhibiting at the Arts Centre and other gallery spaces as opportunities arise. It’s really become my passion in life!
* Are there any exhibition/art events you went to recently that most impressed you and why were you impressed?
Charlie Yang’s recent exhibition at the Arts Centre - the lovely way he shared his personal journey and the quality of his photography. Also the 2014 Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition (Auckland Museum) – stunning wildlife images from photographers of all ages and experience from all around the world.
* In your opinion, what makes good art?
A unique artwork created with passion, well executed and evoking a strong response in the viewer, warranting a closer look.

* What do you like most about Kumeu Arts Centre?
I think the Arts Centre offers good opportunities for local artists and photographers to continually learn and experiment and to exhibit their work. I also enjoy the friendships made, it’s an ideal place for people in the community to get to know each other and share their art interests.
* What would you like to change/improve in Kumeu Arts Centre?
Perhaps a wider reach in promoting exhibitions and events, encouraging more out of area and overseas visitors.
