July 2015 Artist Interview: Julie Moselen
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Everywhere and everything, from a particular book I am reading to the shadow cast by a building, but mainly the natural environment around me. I love how nature constantly amazes me.
Who is your favourite artist?
Far too many to mention, but the most significant are the Newlyn Painters, Barbara Hepworth,
Ben Nicholsen, Naam Gabo, Patrick Heron, Anthony Frost, Andy Goldsworthy,
Mark Rothko, Don Peebles, Mervyn Williams, Gordon Walters
What artist movement(s) do you feel most inspired by?
Abstract Expressionism and Abstract Sculpture
Talk about your art...how do you feel your art has evolved since you first started making jewellery? What do you aim to do within your work? Are you a 'clean' artist or do you need to get your hands dirty when you work?
My art has evolved considerably since I began making jewellery 20 years ago. Now I have a confidence in my skill level and I love how easy it feels these days. I have also taken up painting, printmaking and stone carving in the last few years. These new processes give me the chance to be expressive in colour and scale, without the constraints that jewellery requires. I still love making jewellery but some days are painting days and some days I want to create on a large scale. The main reason I create anything is to be expressive, to externalise my internal voice - it’s a visual language! But I do need to work with my hands, and yes I need to get my hands dirty.... often very dirty!
Are there any exhibitions you went to recently that most impressed you & why were you impressed?
The recent sculpture exhibition at Pah Homestead was wonderful.
Lots of brilliant New Zealand Sculptors in one place.
In your opinion, what makes good art?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

What do you like most about Kumeu Arts Centre?
I love what it provides for the local community and further afield. It is a centre for likeminded people to come together, learn, create, exhibit and grow as artists. For me it has also become a place of work and I couldn't think of anywhere I would rather spend my days doing what I love most with the people I love the most. Thank you xxx
What would you like to change/improve in Kumeu Arts Centre?
The recent improvements have made a fantastic difference, but I think we could still do with more space and purpose built work spaces for ceramics, sculpture and printmaking. I would love to see the carpark area given some TLC. A green area in front of the bifold doors would make a huge difference aesthetically.
