Artist Statement: This month’s featured artist: Charlie Yang
*Where do you get your inspiration from?
I find inspiration from everyday life. Whether it is from the news on television or the Internet. But most of all through the words of songs.
*Who is your favourite artist?
Henri Cartier- Bresson who is a world famous French photographer, good at capturing the moments, and Robert Capa. He took photos in wars and reported it to the world.
*What artist movement(s) do you feel most inspired by?
I find the most inspiration through 1920s Surrealism. Ansel Adams the photographer in particular. The beauty of the environment which he took his photos were captured in the most beautiful way through the eyes of his lens in one small frame, which is important as a photographer.
*Talk about your art...how do you feel you art has evolved since you began?
To capture the moment you must be willing to get your hands dirty, otherwise you only will get ordinary photos.
When I started photos as a teenager, I felt all looks great, but it is so hard to get a satisfied photo at present.
*Are there any exhibition/art event you went to recently that most impressed you and why were you impressed?
I went to an exhibition in Wellington museum in my new year holiday this year. There were a division of photos showing anorexia nervosa.
*In your opinion, what makes good art?
Taking risks and adventure, dedicating so much time and putting in lots of creative mind to produce something that brings emotion to people.
*Do you have a website?
It is currently in the works. However, I run a photography blog in one of Korea's major websites.
If you would like to see more, they are on display at The Gallery Japanese & Café in Huapai
*What do you like most about Kumeu Arts Centre?
I like that it is in close distance to The Gallery and within the community. It is a great way to meet new people.
It also gives opportunity to new artists to showcase their work.
*What would you like to change/improve in Kumeu Arts Centre?
There could be more advertising around the area to let people know where it is located.
When my customers come to my cafe, I let them know I have an exhibition in Kumeu Arts Centre, nearly 90% of people in this area didn't know where it is. Signage on the road for people to see and walk in would be good also.
