Artist’s Statement: This month’s featured artist:
Romina Marinkovich ~ Clay Artist.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
My inspiration comes from a curiousity with how things work, and an intrigue with machinery of the industrial revolution, mid-century design and the space race that influenced the design of that era. I also like vintage childrens books around those themes.
Who is your favourite artist?
As a teenager I was most drawn to artists like Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Ray Eames, David Hackney to name a few. The work of these artists still very much appeals to me today but I come across new artists all the time, too numerous to mention, with the interenet making it so easy to view art both old and new. Looking at some great installation art for me is the closest thing to being able to step inside someone elses dream.
What artist movement(s) do you feel most inspired by?
I do like the Steampunk movement at the moment. It’s so varied and has no limits in how it can be expressed. Clay doesn’t naturally lend itself to conveying the hard industrial metal asthetics of that style but I like the challenge of using clay in ways that give it another, less organic identity.
* Talk about your art...how do you feel you art has evolved since you first started with clay? Are you a 'clean' artist or do you need to get your hands dirty when you work?
I have only been working with clay solidly for the last three and a half years so I feel I’m really only scratching the surface of what there is to learn and how my focus might change. My studio is a tiny ex granny-flat so I don’t have the luxury of storage and space which is good because I’m constanly having to have clean-outs just so I don’t outgrow my workspace. It goes from messy to tidy to messy again in a continued cycle. Of course being clay I get it everywhere and my hands feel like sandpaper from working with clay and constantly being wet.
In your opinion, what makes good art?
Good art to me is art that holds my attention and stays in my memory. It could be beautiful, ugly or thought provoking but never boring.

What do you like most about Kumeu Arts Centre?
I like that the Kumeu Arts Centre is a place of inclusiveness. It has a community vibe and I think it’s getting stronger all the time
