Artist Member interview: Kirsten Reid – Photographer/Artist
What have you been up to since we last interviewed you in March last year?
I still find my inspiration from living at Muriwai and enjoying the ever-changing landscape, nature and wildlife. The changes in the waves, patterns, textures, light and colours from one moment to the next.
Last year I was mostly concentrating on my photography work,
in particular large photomontage works and impressionist/abstract photography. Since then I have been exploring the art of printmaking, joining Julie Moselen’s ‘Access to Art’ on Monday evenings.
Having tried a number of different techniques such as dry point, reliefs and lino cuts I have found a preference for a combination of reliefs, lino cuts and a ‘free-hand’ style of displacing the ink using water spray, sponges or other means.
I enjoy combining my love of photography with printmaking, printing directly on top of photographs. This creates unique monotype prints, with the photograph sometimes more dominant, other times just
a hint of the underlying image is visible.
Occasionally I experiment with using acrylic on canvas, applying a thick coat of medium, texturising or patterning it and applying colour (or not). I sometimes use this in my photomontage artworks.
Examples of my printmaking, photography and painting works can be viewed at the current exhibition at the art centre (‘Layers & Threads’ until Saturday 9th April) along with the wonderful textile work by Sarah Cox. We have both enjoyed the experience of working together to put on this joint exhibition.
It’s been a busy and successful year for me, exhibiting my artworks at the art centre, Muriwai Arts Exhibition, Art Fusions at Carmel Collage, Mairangi Arts Centre and the Trusts Arts Awards exhibition at Corbans and I now look forward to the rest of the exhibition calendar for 2016.
I’ve also been assisting the arts centre with promotional graphic design, and the hanging of exhibitions which I really enjoy. I love to see the artworks up and displayed in all their glory.
* Are there any exhibition/art events you went to recently that most impressed you and why were you impressed?
I really enjoyed the Kumeu Photography Group’s exhibition in November last year.
It was great to see the work of fellow group members displayed in an exhibition setting and the skill and diversity of our group. I felt very proud.

* What do you like most about Kumeu Arts Centre?
I enjoy the buzz of the arts centre as it grows in popularity as a place to share and learn. Its also been great to see the building improvements, in particular the additional gallery walls, upstairs work space, and those lovely big cupboards for storage.
