2-day Midrange Glaze Colour Development Workshop
Facilitated by Karuna Douglas
Sunday 17th August 10am - 5pm | Day 1
Sunday 24th August 10am - 4pm | Day 2
Cost: $390
All materials and tools will be provided. See 'Prerequisites below for what to bring along.
Are your glaze options holding you and your work back?
Are you seeking to express your glaze voice but don’t know how or where to start?
Are you a budding pottery artist who wants to take your passion to the next level?
Or maybe you’ve just lost your glaze mojo?
Too often potters buy pre-made glazes, not because they want to but because, let’s be honest, pottery is hard. Just getting the best from the making process is so complicated, that when it comes to glazing, we just want good results and often don’t have the time, energy and commitment it takes to make workable, reproduceable glazes. But the downside is that buying pre-made glazes is like buying a pre-mixed cake mix, everyone’s cake tastes the same.
In this workshop, award-winning ceramic artist and glaze mistress Karuna Douglas will provide the fundamentals of glaze testing, as well as sharing practical tips, tricks and techniques from her decades of experience as a glaze specialist.
Working with mid-range glazes, you will explore the magical world of colour development in this immersive, practical 2-day ceramic glaze workshop. This is the first step to developing glazes with colours and textures that will lead to developing your own signature glazes, glazes that express your unique voice.
Day 1 Working in pairs, participants will make glazes from scratch, and then create line, cross and triaxial blends. Using mid-fire glazes, participants will dive into the world of ceramic glaze colours and discover some of the science and creativity behind achieving stunning results that go beyond the standard store-bought options.
Day 2 consists of seminars and discussion covering a range of topics including developing stable, durable glazes, glaze costing and glaze journalling followed by individual and group analysis of the +400 test tiles from Day 1.
This workshop is suitable for beginners/intermediate/advanced clay workers looking to expand their knowledge and skills in ceramic glaze testing.
*Note: The methodology taught is applicable to any firing range.
Prerequisites:
No prior experience in mixing glazes is required although an understanding of ceramic terms such as oxidation/midrange/stoneware/vitrification/maturity etc is recommended and will enable you to get the best out of this workshop.
