Passive Resistance
by Kiri Abraham
26 November - 20 December
Opening - Friday, 29 November 5-7pm

The calendula seed is one which governs through chance. It plants itself everywhere in my garden, its shoots arriving unbidden to populate any bare soil it finds itself in. It feels like a quiet win (especially when it blooms on the berm), a welcome to pollinator insects, a reminder of sunshine in the winter. It also heals – a balm to the skin for cuts and bruises, antioxidant, cleanser. The soil it grows in, and who’s structure it helps to support, is a type of skin – covering the earth and holding nutrients, living communities, mauri. Plant and whenua, each leaning into the other. Soil health is just as human skin health – affected by what is put into it by those who claim it. Biochar added to soil, enriches and enlivens, an ancient additive used to increase water retention and carbon content -offering solutions to such current ‘skin afflictions’ of our earth. Biochar is a charcoal product produced by burning wood within a low oxygen environment.

Fire and Soil and Seed

My drawing has emerged from these ideas. It has been a slow process which has nourished me throughout 2024. It has kept my feet planted and hands in the soil, inviting curiosity about that space between human existence and other living systems.

Manatunatu
by Manatunatu
03 October - 26 October
Opening - Friday, 4 October 5-7pm

Manatunatu (the Samoan word for Reflections) gives visual voice to five artists as they map their creative journeys through their art. Hailing from Samoa, their art reflects the powerful influence of legends, identity, experiences, and faith in their lives.
With a focus on using repurposed materials 'Manatunatu' reflects the influences of the Pasifika past to its artful expression today.
"Our Intention is to create awareness of the many different influences of Pacific culture from past to present.  We all create art that is influenced by living in the Pacific and using material from our surroundings. With increased sensitivity on repurposing material."
This collection of work has journeyed from Samoa. It hopes to inspire its audience to reflect on their own life journeys.

Rust, Polish, Patina, Paint

by Riki Waugh
24th September - 1st October
Meet the Artist - Saturday, 28th September 1:30pm

Rust, Polish, Patina, Paint  is an exploration of transformation and sustainability, featuring works crafted from upcycled and recycled copper, steel and aluminium. Each piece highlights the beauty in the wear and renewal of industrial materials, where rust, polish, and patina symbolise the passage of time.

By using reclaimed metals, this collection challenges the idea of waste, showcasing the artistic potential in discarded materials. The surfaces — worn, polished, and patinated — invite viewers to reflect on the balance between decay and restoration while also considering the impact of sustainability in today's environment.

Perceived: Artist inspiring artists.
By the Muriwai Artist Collective
Main Gallery
27th August - 21st September
Opening event: Saturday 31st August 4pm-6pm

In a dynamic fusion of creativity, 7 artists from Tāmaki Makaurau have extended a unique invitation to 7 guest artists, requesting a piece of their work to inspire and challenge them.

Each artist has then delved into the essence of the guest’s creation, interpreting it through their own distinctive medium. This collaborative exchange not only celebrates artistic diversity but also fosters a rich dialogue between different forms of expression. The result is an intriguing showcase where the original pieces are reimagined, transformed, and enriched through the personal vision of each local artist, offering audiences a multifaceted exploration of creativity and innovation.

For the duration of the exhibition, the Muriwai Artist Collective have a Pop-Up shop in the Pod gallery.

Get Fired members ceramic exhibition alongside Gestural Studies, paintings by Catrina Lloyd

Gestural Studies
Paintings by Catrina Lloyd

Abstract Painter
Main Gallery + Pip Window Gallery
24 July - Aug 24
Opening: Fri 26 July 5-7pm

In concert with our Get Fired! ceramics exhibition, Catrina will be exhibiting a selection of her abstract works.

Catrina's abstract works are a response to the impermanent nature of the West Coast.
Drawn to its movement and raw energy, she creates atmospheric scapes that speak to its transformative nature.
Her latest work is about celebrating the observational, textural and colour studies she makes when out taking in her West Coast environment. These paintings embody a playful approach to mark-making, where the canvas is treated more like a page from her visual diary or studies from her studio floor.

The paintings and drawings of whanau and friends in this exhibition explores traditional techniques of capturing light and emotion.

My Kaupapa (purpose) is to portray emotion through the alla prima (wet on wet) technique of applying oil paint to linen. The dark backgrounds are inspired by my Dutch Jewish heritage, beginning in 17th Century Holland during the Dutch Golden Age when Rembrandt sold small tronies (small portraits) from his studio in the Old Jewish Quarter of Amsterdam. This is part of my whakapapa that stretches from Amsterdam to my marae in Tokaanu. At my marae many portraits painted, carved and photographic adorn our wharepuni walls. They represent the ancestors belonging to my hapū Ngāti Kurauia and the wider confederation of Ngāti Tūwharetoa.

I ask questions when painting, how does a person hold themselves? How do I portray the weight of a door hanging from its hinges? Can I portray the feeling expressed by a wrinkle or the inquiring mind of a child? I think questions and feelings are more important than mere technique, if not vital.

Ben Tankard
Remote Control
Pip Gallery
1 - 25 May 2024
Opening event: Friday May 3rd.

"I’ve spent so much of my life watching TV. The pre-internet gateway into a future world of endless bound. The remote is a curious object, an integral part of the television experience connecting us to the moving image.
Channel surfing. Choice and narrative. Formal domains. Internal gatherings. Potato chips and a couch. Steering into the void. Ancient Tablet. Scale and form. Connection and isolation. Monolithic thought prosthetic.
For the PIP window show Remote Control I’m presenting a body of work casting a static lens on devices that connect our sensory experiences remotely. Using the aesthetics and form to visualise the object in a painterly expression."

Surface Tension

Pod Gallery
3 - 27 April 2024
Opening event: Sat 6th April. 2-4 pm

Surface Tension is an exhibition by two local artists: Monique Ziegler and Julie Davies and explores their responses to social and environmental issues relevant to all New Zealanders today.

Examining the duplicity and beauty of both natural and man made objects, from their superficial appearance to the deeper implications and undercurrents of their use, misuse and worth.

Monique highlights the plight of the native Aotearoa NZ Mangrove, whilst Julie questions the impacts and consequences of fast fashion on the environment. Both ask the viewer to look more deeply into society’s casual approach to the environment, and at the same time they celebrate the often overlooked beauty in their chosen subjects.

Leanne Rogerson & Sheryl Sefton
Story of a Tea Towel
Pod Gallery
5th- 30th March
Opening Night: Friday 8th March. 5-7
(In celebration of international Women's Day)

The tea towel is a ubiquitous symbol of domesticity in any kitchen and any thought on the matter would normally end at that.
For Sheryl and Leanne, it goes further, to them it represents a doorway into a woman's heart and mind, of valuing and validating each other.
The tea towel is the conversation and asks the questions, a carrier of women's evolving roles and ultimately a metaphor for her material existence.

"I would like Story of a Tea Towel exhibition to open dialogue on
viewers personal memories, and the functionally and artistic nature of the NZ tea towel, historically and these current times."

As part of this exhibition the artists are holding multiple 'Stitch and Stories' sessions to come and get involved. Use the link below to find out more information and dates.

Camille Joy
Land & Light

Pod Gallery
11th Feb - 2nd March 2024
Opening event: Sat 17th Feb. 3-5 pm

An exhibition of North West landscapes by local artist Camille Joy. Camille, who works with acrylic paints and mixed media on board and grew up in West Auckland has a strong connection to the local environment.

“For this series, I visited friends and painted ‘en plein air’ at their properties. Observing the visual effects of light on the landscape has taken on deeper meanings. I have learnt that we are caretakers of the land.”

Textured mark-making and expressionist brush strokes give Camille’s work a strong sense of movement, while the rich use of colour and contrasting elements create further interest. These paintings serve as observations on the beauty of light. They evoke a sense of joy and hope while also acknowledging the dark areas, in the land and the lives we dwell in.
