Opening Sunday the 14th August at 3pm, all welcome
An exhibition featuring work of Judy Stokes (Photographer) and Eshah Hudson (Creative Weaver) both who have made their home in Muriwai, New Zealand. Exhibition theme 'When you are an immigrant, you weave who you are into where you are. You become interwoven'
Eshah Hudson and Judy Stokes
With a love of the sea, the coastline, the wind and the artistic opportunities offered ,two women from different continents, offer their interpretation of Muriwai and the lands they come from in their exhibition ”Interwoven”
Judy, originally from South Africa, now living in Muriwai photographer, uses her camera to capture the mood rather than the literal translation of what is framed, with her work often being described as more like a painting than a photograph.
Eshah, born in Malaysia, and raised in Singapore, has practised traditional Maori weaving since arriving in Muriwai in the early nineteen eighties. Eshah began with tutoring from Judy Hohaia, and over the years has been to many workshops both as pupil and instructor, introducing weaving at local pre- and primary schools, and has exhibited her work on several occasions.
Judy regularly exhibits in photographic exhibitions including this year at the National Exhibition in Queenstown, the New Zealand Art Show in Wellington, the Auckland Photography Festival, and with success at the recent North Shore Salon.
Eshah uses mainly flaxes grown on her Muriwai property, to weave wall hangings, ketes, and mats. The summer months see her hats being worn by a good number of locals. Her weaving reflects her true love of the land and the opportunities offered. A recent holiday to her homeland led Judy to compare her two lands and the idea for a combined exhibition with Eshah emerged exploring the concept of interwoven nationalities.
Both love being part of the Muriwai and Kumeu community and invite you to their Interwoven Exhibition being held at the Kumeu Arts Centre between 14 & 27 August
